We walked round Perigueux, an old city in the centre of the Dordogne, in the morning, with the odd stop for coffee in the city squares. We had parked up in an aire by the Dordogne and in the afternoon we cycled a few km along the veloroute- cycleway- which accompanies the river here. Lunch having been worked off we headed south to St Marcel du Perigord, where we were to stay for a few days.
St Marcel is an idyllic valley in the heart of the Dordogne, to the NE of Bergerac. The Brits have been invading and about half the inhabitants are now English. Our friends are here for a few weeks, restoring an old French barn which is fast becoming a dream retreat, for a famous singer and actor, who have commissioned the work.
We spoke to George, the Mayor of St Marcel du Perigord, when we arrived, to discuss where best to hide Mavis. What a charming Frenchman. He insisted that we park on his front lawn, where we stayed for the duration, and invited us round for drink later, then supplied us with some bottles of the local red, for Mavis' cellars.
The days were spent exploring the local valley avec les chiens, and overeating in the local restaurant which is owned by an English psychologist and her French chef partner.
