Day 6 of the Grand Tour. We left Nick's early and decamped at Shoreham for an early morning (well 10am) walk on the mud. Nia talked to her mum and I talked to Kev…. a fisherman digging for lugworms. Apparently lugworms are the breakfast of choice for the local fish and they did look very fat and juicy; but we had already eaten.
Next stop was Dungeness for a walk on the shingle a surreal place….acres of flat shingle covered in large expanses of lichen and interspersed with flooded gravel pits. We saw a multitude….well 8 or 10, Hobbys wheeling and diving in the sky above the gravel pits hunting for their lunch. They were catching dragonflies.
In the evening we pitched up at a cosy site at Folkestone, sandwiched between the white cliffs and the sea, and approached along a tiny precipitous potholed track. We biked along an old concrete path at the back of the beach after setting up camp. So all were well exercised. Nia hit a patch of soft sand and fell in to it. The expedition photographer was a bit slow and didn't capture the moment.
